Materials for Architectural Rendering (HS24)

This seminar week is organized by the Chair of Computational Design at ETH Zurich. The five-day course introduces architects to the fundamentals of computer graphics, material synthesis and rendering. Using computational workflows developed in Adobe Substance, participants will learn to generate building materials, and render their architecture design projects.

The program gives a series of hands-on workshops on the topics of:

  • Image-Based Materials: Using photography, and generative AI tools to capture materials from the real-world and use them to create authentic-looking architectural renders.
  • Procedural Materials: Using procedural graphics, and visual programming to generate customisable material textures, and patterns.
  • Stylization: Transferring styles from static images to 3D models, dynamic scenes and videos.

Engage with experts from computer graphics, and visual effects as they share insights and help you tackle rendering challenges. Plus, participate in an on-site excursion to a building project, where you’ll apply your new skills to a live rendering challenge.
